Frequently Asked Questions

Is GoodTherapy.org an approved CE provider?
GoodTherapy.org is approved for CE sponsorship by:

  • The American Psychological Association (APA)
  • The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)
  • The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)
  • The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC)
  • New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work (NYSED) provider No. 0395
  • New York State Education Department's State Board for Mental Health Practitioners (NYSED)

GoodTherapy.org is also an Approved Renewal Unit Provider with the Montana Office of Public Instruction.

LMFTs, LMHCs, and LCSWs in the state of Montana can obtain continuing education credit hours from GoodTherapy.org without submitting CE events to the Montana Board of Behavior Health individually or paying the event submission fee.

GoodTherapy.org received APA approval in May of 2011, so events in our archive dated before May 2011 do not have APA approval. We received NAADAC approval in July of 2014, so events in our archive dated before July 2014 do not have NAADAC approval. All of our events, live and archived, do have NYSED approval for licensed social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors.

Due to the change in California laws regarding CEs, the BBS is no longer authorized to approve or renew continuing education providers as of January 2015, and this is why GoodTherapy.org's CE events are no longer approved by the BBS in 2016 and beyond. However, both the BBS and the California Board of Psychology recognize and accept continuing education credit courses provided by entities that are approved by the APA. This information can also be found on the New Continuing Education Regulations FAQs on the BBS website, which you can view here.

Given the breadth of approvals we have received, the vast majority of licensing boards for therapists accept our events. However, to confirm that our events are appropriate for your board's specific requirements, we encourage you to make certain your board accepts events approved by the APA, the ASWB, the NBCC, the NAADAC, or the NYSED. Since each board's requirements are unique, we are not able to confirm whether our events meet the requirements for your specific situation.

How many CE credit hours can I get from GoodTherapy.org?
There is no limit to the number of CE credit hours a member can earn by accessing GoodTherapy.org's live events and archived recordings. Most of our CE events award two CE credit hours. For any live events you attend or archived recordings you access, you may download a CE certificate upon completion, documenting your CE credit hours. GoodTherapy.org generally offers three new live CE events per month.

Can I get CE credit hours for accessing archived events?
Absolutely. Recordings of all live CE events are made available within two weeks of the conclusions of the live presentations. You can access all recorded events in the Members' Area of the Continuing Education Archive. To receive CE credit hours for an archived event, you will need to complete a survey as well as a 12-question exam, verifying that you listened to or watched the event in its entirety. Archived CE events generally are considered "homestudy" by licensing boards and are available with the same sponsor approvals as live events.

Who presents GoodTherapy.org's continuing education events?
GoodTherapy.org's CE events are presented by leading thinkers, innovators, researchers, authors, and practitioners in the fields of psychotherapy, counseling, clinical social work, psychology, and/or marriage and family therapy. Our presenters specialize in a variety of clinical topics, and are selected and reviewed by our Continuing Education Committee. If you are looking for a specific presenter, just click on "Search CE Events" tab at the top of this page and type in the first or last name of the presenter you are looking for.

How long are GoodTherapy.org's CE web conferences?
The majority of our upcoming CE presentations are two hours long and award two CE credit hours. Prior to 2014, many of our events were 1.5 hours long, available with 1.5 CE credit hours. Several of our CE events were or are offered as part of a series, available with more credit hours for attending or listening to all sections of the series. You can see the length and the number of CE credit hours available for accessing a particular event listed on each event's description/registration page. Most of our live CE events are scheduled on Fridays at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern).

How do I get a CE certificate?
GoodTherapy.org members may receive a CE certificate verifying their CE credit hours for any live or archived CE event they attend. To request a CE certificate:

  1. Log in to the GoodTherapy.org Members' Area with your username and password.
  2. Click "Request a CE Certificate" at the left of the page under "Continuing Education."
  3. Locate the event you attended.
  4. Enter the start and end codes provided at the beginning and end of the event.
  5. Complete the survey about the event.
  6. If you access a recorded event, you must also complete a multiple-choice exam based on the event material. You must score above 80% to be eligible for a CE certificate, but you can retake the exam as many times as needed if you do not succeed the first time.
  7. Print your CE certificate or save it as a PDF. You may print as many copies as you need for your records, and you may access your CE certificates at any time through the GoodTherapy.org Members' Area.

How can I register for a GoodTherapy.org CE event?
To register for an upcoming CE event, simply select the event you are interested in from our list of upcoming events. From the event's page, click on the green "Register" button at the right side of the page. If you are not logged in already, you will be prompted to log in with your GoodTherapy.org username and password, and then you will be registered. You will receive reminder emails with participation instructions the week before the live event.

You do not need to register for an event to access the archived recording. All CE recordings in the GoodTherapy.org Continuing Education Archive are available at any time.

How much do GoodTherapy.org's CE events cost?
All of GoodTherapy.org's CE events are available at no additional cost to GoodTherapy.org members. To learn more about GoodTherapy.org's benefits of membership or to join today, click here.

What is the cost saving benefit of GoodTherapy.org's CE events?
GoodTherapy.org provides an affordable and efficient opportunity for mental health practitioners to fulfill their continuing education requirements. Members receive unlimited access to all of our live CE events at no additional cost. This includes 24/7 access to our extensive archive of past CE events, all of which are available with continuing education credits. Our CE web conferences are presented by experts in the fields of mental health and psychology. No other online therapist directory offers a continuing education program like GoodTherapy.org's.

GoodTherapy.org understands how expensive and time consuming it can be to earn CE credits required for your license. Attending in-person events often costs hundreds of dollars in travel expenses and admission, while other online CE courses can be expensive, inconvenient, and inconsistent in their content and quality. GoodTherapy.org's CE web conferences are included with your membership and are approved by the American Psychological Association (APA), National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC), and Association of Social Work Boards Approved Continuing Education (ACE).

Are the CE courses considered live events?
If you access a GoodTherapy.org CE event being presented in "real time," then the event is considered a live event. If you choose to access recordings of the event in the GoodTherapy.org Continuing Education Archive, then you are accessing what most CE sponsors call a "home-study program."

Are the CE courses considered teleconferences or web conferences?
The majority of our CE events are offered as live web conferences via the Internet and phone, with live streaming video and document sharing and question-and-answer periods. Audio/video recordings are available of all CE events in the Continuing Education Archive two weeks after the live event. However, many events also are available as video recordings.

Are the CE events accessible for people with disabilities?
GoodTherapy.org is committed to offering high-quality, accessible events to all our members and providing accommodation for individuals with sensory impairments to the best of our ability. Our continuing education events are offered as live-streaming video and audio conferences. Participants may access these events using their computer and/or phone from a location of their choosing. A video/audio recording of each live event is added to the GoodTherapy.org Member's Area within one week after the conclusion of the live event, and a written transcript of the entire event is added there within one month. Individuals with questions or requests regarding accessibility can email us or call our support team at 888-563-2112 ext. 2.
