Couples Therapy for ADHD: Treating Both Partners and Re-Balancing the Relationship

Presented by Ari Tuckman, PsyD on 05-22-2024 at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

ADHD does not create unique challenges for couples—it just exacerbates universal struggles that everyone faces in their relationship. All couples need to resolve differences in priorities, preferences, and ways of being in order to create a satisfying life together. When ADHD is undiagnosed or not well managed, it can create seemingly insurmountable disagreements where both partners feel right, but neither is happy and the therapist feels just as powerless to change it. This is as true in couples therapy as it is in individual therapy when the topic of relationships arises.

Adults with ADHD are over-represented in therapy offices, especially couples therapy, because of the many ways that it can impact relationship functioning. A knowledgeable therapist will be able to more effectively address the common dynamics that result and help couples (and individual therapy clients) create a more balanced, respectful, and fair relationship that works for both partners.

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar for therapists, Ari Tuckman, PsyD will review practical strategies that clinicians can use with individuals and couples. This will be an engaging presentation that offers nuts and bolts strategies backed by a deep understanding of relationship dynamics and ADHD neurology.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Facilitate a discussion with clients about what to expect of treatment for ADHD.
  2. Explain the many ways that ADHD can impact both partners in a couple and the common relationship dynamics that ensue.
  3. Apply a deeper understanding of ADHD and relationship dynamics to work more effectively with clients impacted by ADHD.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: This program adapts common couples therapy strategies for couples where one partner has ADHD. While there are strong research foundations for couples therapy in general and individual therapy and medication for clients with ADHD, there is not yet much research specifically for couples with one ADHD partner. Nonetheless, the material in this program is consistent with the scope of practice of therapists with training in couples therapy and/or ADHD. References will be provided.

Declaration identifying any potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support: Ari Tuckman receives royalties from Routledge for his book, ADHD After Dark: Better Sex Life, Better Relationship, which may be mentioned in passing in this presentation.
