Black Youth Suicide Risk and Assessment

Presented by Dr. Rhonda C. Boyd on 06-26-2024 at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) to 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern)

Black youth suicide has received national attention over the last several years due to the increasing rates of suicide deaths and attempts that have been shown in studies, as well as federal datasets. These current trends highlighted the need for identifying suicide risk in Black youth and culturally responsive screening and assessment measures.

In this 2-hour continuing education presentation, Dr. Rhonda Boyd will present the recent data on rates of suicidal ideation and behaviors for Black children and adolescents. Dr. Boyd will discuss risk and protective factors to consider when assessing Black youth for suicide risk, as well as culturally relevant frameworks. A brief review of suicide risk screening and assessment and recommendations will be provided.

This introductory continuing education web conference is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Describe recent trends of suicidal ideation and behaviors among Black youth.
  2. Identify culturally relevant risk and protective factors in the assessment of suicide risk.
  3. Assess suicide screening and assessment approaches for Black youth.
