I believe psychotherapy is truly a process, one which the therapist can help guide a client to make the adjustments they need for positive change. My approach is integrative which means after I assess the needs of a client, I use the theories or techniques which might best help them succeed.

It is very important to meet a client where they are in their own process which might mean starting at the very basic steps. Once a client can understand their needs, has a grasp on emotions and their affect as well as the importance of being in the here and now, they can recognize and change the patterns which may have gotten them stuck in the past. It is important to treat the whole person and not just the symptoms.

I offer a safe and inviting therapeutic environment to help foster the change needed for longer term success. I can be very solution-focused and and am an engaged therapist who helps a client better understand their strengths as well as gain the tools to best help themselves.

For the last 10 years, I have been working with clients and their families helping them to find the answers for positive growth and change. Many of these years were spent working in Wilderness Therapy.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

There are many therapists out there to choose from and at times this can be a very difficult decision. Like you, therapists have their own strengths, their own styles and their own perspectives. In a perfect world, I would be able to help every person who calls to make an appointment. As I have found, however, we do not live in a perfect world and my approach to therapy does not work for everyone.

When choosing a therapist, it is important to not just look at a picture and read a bio but to actually set up a time to speak on the phone. This way you can not only hear their voice but ask the questions which are most important to you.

A therapist should be personable and communicate well. They should have the ability to build trust while also making you feel welcome and comfortable and safe. The relationship you are entering into is truly an alliance. For the partnership to work, a therapist should be flexible and adapt their skills to your needs; not use a one-size fits all approach.

Their experience and knowledge should be in line with what you believe you need to be successful. And don't be afraid to ask for what you need as this sets you in the right direction from the start. A good therapist should offer hope even if the journey appears daunting to you.
