Rockville is the administrative center of Montgomery County, Maryland. The city first formed back in America’s Revolutionary period. It went through several name changes before locals settled on the name “Rockville” (due to the town’s proximity to Rock Creek). The settlement was officially recognized as a town in 1801.
Rockville has a land area of about 13 square miles and is home to 67,000 people. From 2010 to 2016, the number of residents increased by 9%. Approximately 2,900 military veterans live in the city.
The ethnic composition of the population in Rockville is 51% white, 20% Asian, 16% Hispanic, and 10% black. Thirty-five percent of residents are foreign-born. Forty-three percent of residents speak a foreign language at home. More than 8,100 Spanish speakers, 5,200 Chinese speakers, and 1,300 Korean speakers live in Rockville.
Youth suicide is a growing issue in Montgomery County. A 2014 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states almost 16% of Montgomery County high school students seriously thought about committing suicide the previous year. Twelve percent of students in the county made a suicide plan in 2013.
In 2018, roughly 40 students met with public school representatives at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville. The forum was organized in response to two student suicides in 2017. Students’ most common concerns included how to handle a school counselor who is not taking them seriously and what to do if a friend is considering suicide.
