What's unique about GoodTherapy.org?

There are a number of therapist directories, so why choose GoodTherapy.org?  We think the difference is clear:

  • GoodTherapy.org is the only directory dedicated to helping people find empowering, collaborative, and nonpathologizing therapists.
  • GoodTherapy.org advocates for healthy psychotherapy by encouraging healing professionals to do their own work, by educating the public about the differences between healthy and unhealthy psychotherapy, and by promoting collaborative and non-pathologically based froms of therapy.
  • In order for a therapist to become a Member of GoodTherapy.org, he or she must certify that the therapy they provide accords in orientation and attitude to our philosophy as defined in the Elements of Good Therapy Statement.
  • This certification does not guarantee that every therapist listed truly or always works in a healthy, collaborative, and nonpathologizing way, but it comes closer to the ideal than any other directory.
  • We believe that given a choice, most consumers will choose a GoodTherapy.org therapist over an unknown, which is what you can get when searching other directories.

Why should I market my practice online?

"The Times they Are A-Changin"

Wow. Things have changed tremendously since the introduction of the internet in the early '90s. Whether it fits our style or not, the ability to access information has revolutionized nearly everything we do: from meeting friends, making reservations, shopping, banking, and even finding a therapist.

Only a decade ago it was safe to say that building up to a full-time practice would take most people between 3 to 5 years.  However, many new therapists have discovered that with web advertising it's possible to build a practice in much less time.  Traditionally people have relied on "word-of-mouth" for a recommendation, but now many people turn to Google, Yahoo, and other search engines to find therapists.  Of course, good advertising is no replacement for doing good therapy.  But if you do good work, having a steady referral base from the web will only fuel a good practice and generate more word-of-mouth referrals.

How many people visit your site?

In addition to becoming associated with a well respected organization, there are practical benefits of being a GoodTherapy.org Member. One of these is referrals.  GoodTherapy.org receives a large amount of search engine traffic and many visitors searching our directory.

GT Statistics for October 2008:

●  20 months in operation

●  Over 3600 Therapists & Counselors listed in our directory

●  Over 30,000 to 60,000 unique visitors per month

What if there are already a large number of therapists listed in my city?

Please be assured:

●  Member's are rotated randomly on all landing pages and ordered by distance from zip code on the zip code search results page.

●  We receive a high volume of visitors.

How many referrals should I expect?

GoodTherapy.org receives a high amount of web-traffic. Between 30,000 and 60,000 individuals visit our website every month. Based on a August, 2008 analysis of profile visits, emails sent through our system from potential clients to GT members, and the number of out-clicks to member websites, the average number of referrals provided to therapist members via GoodTherapy.org per month is 5. However, this does not include phone calls. We are currently unable to track phone calls made to members.  However, in version 3.0, which is due out in November, clicks to see a member's phone number will be tracked and included in our profile and site statistics.

Please note, when you join GoodTherapy.org potential clients will contact you through a number of mediums, including:

  • Phone
  • Out-clicking to your professional website (if you have one)
  • Email (your email address will remain confidential)

Some positive responses we've received recently:

"Wonderful that you anticipate questions and give factual statistical information regarding possible referrals, etc. This is an unusual degree of transparency."

"You are doing a great job.  Now take your wife on a long weekend and get some rest!!"

"A note to let you know that I was a first resistant to the new fee based structure. I went back through my records and found where I had received four referrals through your site. Two were looky-loos, one was a conflict of interest so I referred the case out, and one has been an on-going and wonderful client who is making great progress. To me, that is an awesome ratio for having been listed a little over two months.  I will gladly support the cause as I have a relatively new practice and every referral counts.  Please continue to keep up the good work.  Many thanks to you."

"Hi Noah. I don’t know if you will remember me but my partner and I signed up about a month ago (from New Mexico) and later got another of our therapist friends to list with you. I sent you a short note at that time to thank you for the site. So far we have received 2 new referrals (one only a day after the listing posted) and our friend has received at least one that I know of. You had asked for my input when you were thinking of going fee-based and i just wanted to let you know that I totally support your reasons for doing so. And, $10 a month is so, very fair! We will gladly pay our membership fee. I see great potential for the site and I truly wish you the best as you grow your organization. Bravo to you and Charlene for not under-valuing your time and energy.

"Hi Noah, I've gotten one referral from being on your site so I definitely believe that it's worth the money. I certainly think that it's completely valid and understandable for you to be charging for your time and the effort (not to mention the money) that it takes to run a website. I love being part of a web community where the therapeutic ideals are apparent and trainings are a big part of creating community. I will certainly be paying my membership fee. It's a very reasonable fee and I wish you all the luck in the world in making this work and manifesting prosperity for yourself and your partner. Warmly,"

"Dear Noah, Thanks for all your work on the site.  I plan to sign up monthly. It is a good deal and you are thoughtful and generous, perhaps too generous. Finally, why would I choose your site from the dozens of other sites I could list on?  Because the client I am looking to work with/and who is looking to work with me, is self-selecting by going to goodtherapy.org. We generally share a certain sensibility, which is a good first step, and just a step, towards good working fit.  Thank you and your wife for all your work.  Good luck!

I've been happy with goodtherapy and plan to renew.  I really like that the site is helping to inform and empower consumers and I want to support that effort.  I think so much of how the searches show up are based on what the searcher punches in. In this case I really think that having a specialty niche really helps.  We specialize in infertility counseling.  So, when I search for "infertility counseling Albuquerque" goodtherapy is the 4th listing on the 1st page (above PT, by the way).  So, I think it's important to keep in mind that the text in your profile is really important too. I was actually shocked they would offer their services for free so for us it feels like a good value. Noah, thanks for being so accessible on this forum and best of luck."

"We have received 2 good referrals (weekly clients) and joined 1 month ago. That's more than we got in our first month  with PT.  GT comes in high on the searches in my area as well.  Higher than other sites.  We plan to join and really support the mission of the site.  The first session from our first referral more than covered our membership."

"To Noah, I have received 2 or 3 referrals already, and I am very happy with this. I also am in agreeance with the philosophy behind it. I plan to continue with your website. What do I need to do to continue? Thank you very much! Sincerely,"

"you rock noah! i want you and your family to be repaid, AND take a super trip to mexico! thanks for your offer and kind mail. very best wishes,"

"I'm in.  Thanks for the honesty it's refreshing."

"Regarding charging $10/month, I think it's a great idea. You're right, if I get even one client for one session in a year's time, I've paid for my membership. I've also been told by someone who sent me a referral who said, "Oh yeah, I saw him on that site." The extra exposure was so helpful. Also, I'd much rather pay $10/month than lose your service. For those complaining, $10/month seems to be the "low end" going rate for advertising. A few sites are free, but many are much more expensive."

"Thanks.  This was helpful. I will almost certainly sign up again when I return from India in January."

"I joined Good Therapy because I shared your Hope and Purpose for the profession; getting referrals would be a bonus. I am proud to affiliated with GoodTherapy.org and wish its visionaries the best."

"Hi Noah! I love your site, and have gotten two referrals from it so far. It is well worth the fee you plan to charge. Thanks for all you do."

"Hi Noah & Team, Thank you so much! This is wonderful news. I am so glad to be part of an organization like GoodTherapy. What a shining example you are setting. My colleague encouraged me to contact you, and she is thrilled as well. She speaks so highly of you. May you enjoy great success with your good works. All the best"

"You guys are doing a great job."

"Dear Noah, I just wanted you to know that I appreciate all the things you are doing to ensure clients rights to receive good quality therapy."

"let me express that you provide a wonderful service.  I have gotten wonderful referrals form you.  My partner is convinced that it is because you have the word 'good' in the name.  But I think it is because you set out to provide a helpful and needed service to the holistic therapeutic community and those who are in need of their services."

"Dear Good Therapy Team--I could not let another day pass without commending you on all the hard work you have done to get this site up and running.  I have a web site and I actively market in on the internet through various directories and other therapy sites.  I know how much time it takes to input information and to get listed so that my site is visible, and I know how expensive fees are for listing on various sites.  You not only provided me a free site to get started but almost over night you got Good Therapy top visibility on the search engines.  Anyone who attempts to get visible on the internet knows how difficult it is.  I want to tell you I was astonished to see within a couple weeks of listing with you that on a search for therapy I was coming up in the top three as a member of Good Therapy. Without Good Therapy my web site gets zero visibility and it has been online for two months now."

"The site that you have set up is really a Good Thing and it is perfectly obvious that you have put an enormous amount of time into it. Thank you."

"I commend Good Therapy for its content and attempts to bring forth counseling ideas and ethics in a positive way."

"What you and Charlene are doing is lovely and I'm proud to be a part of it. It is so affirming to find other therapists of similar mind!"

"You demonstrate the beautiful support and good work that Good Therapy seems to stand for. I am so happy to have found you all."

"We got another call from GT just last Tuesday, so we couldn’t be happier. Thank you guys, for your hard work and passion."

"I just wanted to congratulate you on your web site and wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. Your sincerity and commitment to this profession is clear and your approach is refreshing."
