Towson is the administrative center of Baltimore County, Maryland. It has a land area of 14 square miles. The community is named after Ezekiel Towson, who arrived in the area in 1750. 

Towson has a population of 58,000 people. The racial composition of the population is 75% white, 14% black, 5% Asian, and 4% Hispanic. Sixty-three percent of residents over age 25 have earned a bachelor’s degree. The city has over 2,600 veterans.

Ten percent of Towson residents are foreign-born. Over 11% speak a foreign language at home. Towson is home to 1,500 Spanish speakers and 600 Chinese speakers.

Mental Health in Towson

The rising cost of health care for the 1,200 inmates at the Baltimore County jail in Towson is a concern for county officials. A growing number of inmates are affected by mental health issues, opioid addiction, and chronic diseases. In 2007, an estimated 25% of inmates in Baltimore County jail needed mental health services. By 2017, that figure had grown to 50%.

The county is considering hiring a private company to provide dental, medical, and mental health services for inmates. The estimated cost of these health services is over $10 million. Officials cite the opioid epidemic as a key factor in rising expenses.
