About The Woodlands

The Woodlands, Texas is a master-planned community, meaning its planners built more recreational amenities than average. The community has more than 133 parks and 210 miles of hike and bike trails. It was officially opened for use in 1974. The Woodlands covers 43 square miles and has over 110,000 residents. 

Seventeen percent of residents in The Woodlands are foreign-born. The ethnic make-up of the community is 75% white, 15% Hispanic, 5% Asian, and 3% black. Almost 20% residents speak a foreign language at home. The Woodlands is home to 10,600 Spanish speakers, 1100 Chinese speakers, and 700 German speakers.

Ninety-seven percent of residents who are 25 years of age or older have completed their high school education. Sixty-two percent of residents in this age group have also earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. People in The Woodlands earn a mean annual wage of $55,500 and have a median household income of $109,600. 

Mental Health in The Woodlands

In 2017, the state of Texas was close to the bottom of the national list in terms of mental health spending per capita. A proposed reduction in federal funding may result in less mental health care for state residents. In The Woodlands, 6% of residents aged 65 years or younger do not have health insurance.

Access to mental health care is a major concern in the state. Up to 24% of people who are incarcerated in Texas have a mental health need. Records from 2015 show state mental health hospitals have only 2,400 available beds. According to the same data, wait lists for beds have quadrupled since 2013.
