About Katy

Katy is a city in Texas. The area was originally used as hunting grounds by the Karankawa Indians. The city of Katy was first settled in 1872 and incorporated in 1945. Katy is allegedly named after the M-K-T Railroad that runs through it. 

The city of Katy has 17,000 inhabitants. The number of residents increased by 21% between 2010 and 2016. The ethnic composition of the population is 64% white, 30% Hispanic, 3% Asian, and 2% black. Thirty-two percent of residents age 25 or older have earned a bachelor’s degree.

Roughly 15% of residents are foreign-born. Twenty-four percent of people in Katy speak a foreign language at home. Katy is home to approximately 3,200 Spanish speakers and 200 Tagalog speakers.

The median household income is $71,700, which is significantly higher than the state average. The cost of living in Katy is less than the national average. Nine percent of Katy residents live below the poverty line. 

Mental Health in Katy

Encompass Health Corporation plans to build a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Katy. The facility will be used to help residents with brain injuries, neurological diseases, and other debilitating conditions. Staff will help residents regain functionality and independence. Construction work is scheduled to start in the fall of 2018. Health services are expected to begin in the fall of 2019.
