My Approach to Helping
A cognitive-behavioral treatment philosophy and approach best describes my orientation. What a patient knows in his head/heart and what he does with what he knows are my principal treatment axes. While my master's degree education favored a client-centered model, my doctoral studies and subsequent professional practice have taught me the view that the best test of anything is: Does it work? I believe in the impact of unconditional positive regard on personal change for the client. I have learned as well that often the patients who see me value my directness, attention to measurable outcome, high feedback, role-playing (often, but not always), and homework assignments. I typically use the back of my professional card to write my prescription. Over the years, I have discovered a few patients have saved these directives like baseball cards. I am convinced of the importance of involving the significant other(s) in the treatment context, when possible. With marital and family therapy, I like the energy created and the results attained.
