Los Altos is a city in Santa Clara County, California. It is located in the heart of Silicon Valley and has a land area of 6 square miles. Los Altos has a population of 30,600 people.

The number of residents in Los Altos increased by 5% from 2010 to 2016. An estimated 1,300 military veterans live in Los Altos. The ethnic composition of the population is 65% white, 26% Asian, 3% Hispanic, and 1% black. 

Foreign-born people make up 25% of the population. Twenty-nine percent of residents speak a foreign language at home. Over 2,600 Chinese speakers, 700 Spanish speakers, and 400 Persian speakers live in Los Altos.

The median household income in Los Altos is $187,700. This number is roughly three times the median household income in California ($63,800). There are 10,900 households in Los Altos. Eighty-three percent of families own their home. 

Mental Health in Los Altos

The Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC) provides support and counseling services to people in Los Altos and neighboring cities. Services are also provided to schools in the Los Altos School District. Students can access mental health resources on campus free of charge. The cost of these services is covered primarily by CHAC, with some funding coming from the school district.

The cost of providing individual counseling services in schools is roughly $77 per hour. In recent years, the Los Altos School District has increased funding to cover these costs in a more balanced way. Although CHAC has a $3 million annual budget, the school district recognizes that schools need to play a larger role in mental health support.
