What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process
There are two important factors that can lead to successful therapy: Belief and Comfort. Belief that you can make real changes, and Comfort with your experience. If you don't Believe just yet, don't worry! You don't have to try to force yourself to feel better. The fact that you are here means that some part of you is willing to give it a shot. You may also feel uncomfortable sharing personal, and usually private, things about yourself. This is natural and a well trained therapist will allow for the process to develop at its own pace.
Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed
This can be difficult to believe but of course its true. People don't usually sit around in public discussing these things but they exist -- for everyone. I chose to help with the internal struggles because they are real and they hurt. And there is not a single person who does not experience some distress at some point. Its simply a consequence of living. We all have to struggle with things from time to time, and when we do, we experience growth because of it. Without struggle, life would be pretty boring. We are not born as intact, factory condition models without flaws or bugs. We have to develop into our best selves through experience. Therapy can help us with that.
