Saint Charles is an Illinois city located in both DuPage and Kane counties. The city has a land area of 15 square miles. Saint Charles is located in the Central Fox Valley River region, 35 miles west of Chicago. 

Saint Charles has 33,000 inhabitants. The median age in the city is 43 years old. The racial composition of the city is 85% white, 9% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 2% black. An estimated 47% of adults over age 25 have a bachelor’s degree.

Ninety-five percent of the people in Saint Charles are American citizens. Foreign-born people account for 10% of the population. Thirteen percent of residents have a native language that is not English. There are 2,100 Spanish speakers and 300 Gujarati speakers in Saint Charles.

Mental Health in Saint Charles

The Saint Charles Police Department actively supports mental and behavioral health in the city. The department has run a prescription drug disposal program for over seven years. In 2017, the department safely disposed of roughly 224 pounds of unwanted or unused prescription drugs. 

2017 also marked when a social worker employed by the Association for Individual Development began assisting police officers. The social worker provided office hours two days per week at the Saint Charles Police Department. That year, the social worker assisted 491 residents in 213 cases. 

At present, 14 police officers have received crisis intervention training (CIT) to assist residents with mental health issues. The Saint Charles Police Department aims to have all sworn personnel trained in CIT.
