My Approach to Helping

Families:
I work with individuals and families to capitalize on their strengths and develop effective coping strategies. Parents are empowered to lead their households and children are taught to trust and obey their parents. I try to bring order to where there has been chaos.
Individuals:
Psychological signs and symptoms are often produced by various stressors and complicated by ineffective communication. Sometimes medications are needed to contain the severity of a symptom if it is getting in the way of successful skill acquisition. When the usefulness of medication has worn off I will work with the patient to come off their medications in a safe manner.
Couples:
I help couples communicate effectively and openly about their hopes, fears, and desires. We explore each individual's moral framework, a way of knowing, and family of origin. I help you understand each other's individual and communal goals for your relationship, and we explicitly discuss a host of issues (money, sex, mental illness, end of life care, children, fertility, infidelity, addiction, religion, extended family) likely to come up in a long-term married relationship. Some couples will realize that they ought not to get married, while some realize that they ought to stay married, and others realize it is time to stop being married.
Evaluations and Psychopharmacology:
I utilize neuropsychiatric testing and genomic testing to reduce some of the uncertainty associated with psychiatric mental health.

More Info About My Practice

Before you request an appointment state your intention out loud. Ask yourself what is it you want from this person? Then pick up the phone a request an appointment. Some questions I am going to ask you in our first session include: Why now? What has changed? What would you like to accomplish? How will you know if it is accomplished? What are you willing to do to accomplish it? You may not yet be ready, and that is OK. When you are ready, I am here.

On the Fence About Going to Therapy?

Do you want to spend months to years on a stranger's couch over analyzing the minutia of daily life? Do you want to continue living regretting the past and fearing the future? Do you want to sit in a waiting room of a Psychiatric Mental Health office with curious people who are very interested in knowing what you are in for? This service is for the high net-worth individual who wants to enhance their performance, and finally deal with their issues. This is for the person who finds himself surrounded by yes men, but realizes the importance of no. This is for the boy in a man's body who has yet to realize his masculinity.
Man Therapy: integrative psychiatric & medical house calls to efficiently diagnose a problem and restore you to health. You participate in specific therapeutic activities that enable you to achieve your desired goal. I believe in using all available tools to help you achieve autonomy and reduce your victimhood. Confidential compassionate care in your home
You are not alone, and I have heard it all. Regardless of the issue help is available. Many repeat the same thing, expecting different results. Those people are insane; you obviously are not because you have decided to get help. Are you ready to stop the insanity? How will you do it?

My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'

Mental Illness is not strictly a biological problem that can be entirely solved with medication. There are some people with mental illness that have learned effective strategies to manage their symptoms and do not take medication. Leaving a symptom untreated for more than 3 months increases the chance of habituation, and then it becomes difficult to discern if the maladaptive behavior is a true disorder or a persistent habit after it is treated. The longer a maladaptive behavior remains the longer it will take to treat. It is normal to experience some grief along the way as you discover a new way of being and forsake the old way.
