My Approach to Helping
The therapeutic relationship is a sacred interpersonal bond built on trust. Together, we will co-create this safe space, so you can overcome any and all obstacles you may be facing in your life right now. As a psychotherapist, I approach my work using an anti-oppressive social justice lens, which enables us to come to a deeper understanding of how our environment impacts us as individuals, families, and communities, e.g., we may explore anything from the trickle-down effect of workplace stress to the negative impact of mainstream media violence on children. Specific treatment modalities range from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to narrative therapy and trauma-focused care. While your unique story is centered in our work, I draw on my own experiences as an African American woman of color, parent of two, and poet when appropriate. For instance, my personal experience as an artist informs my understanding of anxiety's hidden complexities within this particular population. Regardless of what is coming up for you, I use a strengths-based approach to help you access your innate human capacity towards resilience.
