Therapy is as simple as having someone to listen and give you a safe place to express and confront your biggest fears and darkest secrets, without judgement. Most people who have been hesitant to do therapy, say afterwards "wow, this wasn't so bad, I actually feel much better." And further down the road in time, they feel they have tackled emotions and old issues that they had been spending so much time and energy 'stuffing down' in order to not feel the feelings. I believe that it actually takes less energy to deal with the issues and put them aside for good, than it does trying to avoid them or even worse, self-medicate with shopping, food, drugs or alcohol, sex, internet surfing - whatever it is you might be using to avoid your feelings.
