About Redmond

Redmond is a city in King County, Washington. It covers 16 square miles and is located on the Sammamish River. The city was founded in 1871 and initially named Salmonberg. It was later renamed in honor of Luke McRedmond, the settlement’s first postmaster. 

Redmond has 62,000 inhabitants. The number of residents grew by 15% from 2010 to 2016. Seventy-three percent of people in Redmond are American citizens (compared to 93% of people nation-wide). Around 2,000 military veterans live in the city.

The ethnic composition of the population is 55% white, 30% Asian, 10% Hispanic, and 2% black. Foreign-born people make up 39% of the Redmond population. Forty-three percent of residents speak a foreign language at home. Redmond is home to 4,300 Spanish speakers and 3,700 Chinese speakers.

In Redmond, the median household income is $107,300. Fifty-two percent of families own their home. Roughly 7% of Redmond residents live in poverty.
