My Approach to Helping

Hello! I’m Ashton (he, him, his), a queer, transmasculine social worker and harm reduction advocate. I support my clients in making meaning of their life experiences and building resilience in stressful times.

During our sessions, my clients can expect a compassionate atmosphere that encourages creativity and growth. I highlight my clients' strengths in the face of adversity and embrace unconventional solutions. Need to cover your computer screen with sticky notes so you remember an appointment? Do it! Have five trash cans in your bedroom so one is always in arm's reach? Amazing! I believe in doing what works, no matter how weird it may seem.

While it is tempting to praise breakthroughs and "A-ha!" moments, I find the work most compelling when my clients don't have an answer yet. The greatest opportunity for positive change can come when one is at a crossroads; the moment before a decision is one of millions of possibilities. I support clients in living with uncertainty and expanding their tolerance for distress.

If you are looking for a nonjudgmental and compassionate space to grow, connect with me and schedule a consultation!

More Info About My Practice

I believe in an unconditional acceptance of all gender identities and expressions. I facilitate access to gender-affirming medical transition to the greatest extent possible by writing letters of readiness and connecting clients to competent providers in their area. In our therapy sessions, my clients can safely explore their feelings without fear of invalidation or gatekeeping.

Outside of therapy, I train medical and mental health professionals on the essentials of gender-affirming care. This role ensures that I am always engaged with the newest developments in both transition medicine and public policy.

I also take a harm reduction-oriented perspective to alcohol and other substance use. An abstinence-only approach to substance use may not be realistic or desirable; I recognize that psychoactive substances often serve very important purposes, like alleviating physical and psychological distress. I connect my clients to essential harm reduction resources and create safety plans to promote safer substance use, considering the drug, (mind)set, and setting all as parts of the whole picture.
