About the Bronx
The Bronx is a borough in New York City, New York. It covers 42 square miles. The Bronx is the northernmost of New York City’s five boroughs and the only one located on the mainland. The borough was incorporated into New York City in 1898.
The Bronx has a population of 1.5 million people. The population grew by 6% from 2010 to 2017. An estimated 81% of people in the borough are American citizens.
The racial composition of the Bronx is 56% Hispanic, 30% black, 9% white, and 4% Asian. Foreign-born residents account for 35% of the population. Nearly 59% of residents speak a language other than English at home. The Bronx is home to 623,000 Spanish speakers.
People in the Bronx earn a mean annual wage of $18,900. The median household income is $35,300. Roughly 29% of residents live below the poverty line.
Mental Health in the Bronx
Substance abuse is an issue in the Bronx. In 2016, 344 Bronx residents died from drug overdoses, double the number from 2010. The Bronx saw more overdose deaths than any other borough in New York City.
Depression is also a serious concern for Bronx residents. In 2014, almost 15% of adults in the Bronx reported a history of depression. Women had a higher prevalence rates than men (17% vs 10%). Hispanic and non-Hispanic white individuals were more likely to have a history of depression than other racial/ethnic groups. In 2015, the percentage of youths attempting suicide increased by 25% compared to 2003.
Access to mental health care is a problem for some individuals in the Bronx. Over 9% of residents do not have any health insurance. Of the residents insured by Medicaid, 91% live in areas where there is a shortage of mental health providers.
