I strive to provide a safe space in which anything can be examined and felt deeply. While I strive to provide this space, I recognize that you (as client) get to decide when you feel safe in that space and when you can trust me. I offer a deep inquiry and give you complete freedom to determine when, if and how deep you want to go.

Rather than following any particular psychological models, I allow my work to be informed by all the models I have studied while seeing each client and each couple's relationship as being unique. My work has often been described as creative as I search for and find how to respond to each client.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

I have already had a full life working in technology and medicine. My two main employers were Apple Computer and the University of California, San Francisco. I understand the challenges of working in demanding environments and can help provide insights and tools to clients.

I have done this despite a difficult childhood that did not provide me with useful models for how to resolve difficulties and left me with a lot of trauma to work through.

Perhaps most importantly, I grew up in a family from which I could not wait to escape and to which I never wanted to return. Now I am a grandfather in my own family, which is close and loving.

Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance

With all the disagreement in the field about what works in therapy, the thing that has most consistently been shown to matter is the relationship between client and therapist. I strive to work in a way that explicitly builds on this understanding. If you choose me as your therapist, I will check in with you frequently to see how my work is serving you and how our relationship is or is not working for you. I will do my utmost to match what I offer to what meets your individual needs.
