My Approach to Helping

A wise individual once shared with me that one cannot reach the depths of their greatnesses, without first exploring the depths of their suffering. Whatever you may be feeling in this moment, remember that you are a multifaceted and complex individual, changing with every new experience and emotion each day. Navigating life hasn’t been an easy task, and perhaps, the decision to search for a therapist has convinced you that you may even be failing at it. In this therapeutic space, you are never a failure. The first step to begin is a powerful one. I’m devoted to providing you the environment, empathy, and support you need to better understand the circumstances that may be preventing you from living a more positive, cohesive life. I consider my style to be relational, holistic, and client-centered. I’m trained in couples counseling, as well as the Ackerman Relational Approach: a model which analyzes interpersonal connections through a multi-cultural lens. I frequently utilize mindfulness techniques and narrative therapy as we learn and embrace the many overlapping identities that exist within you. I look forward to being your anchor in this new journey to healthier wellbeing.

More Info About My Practice

Chelsea Thornton, LMSW is a NY-based psychotherapist whom is firm on the values of diversity, community, compassion, and respect. She welcomes clientele of any cultural background into her space with sincerity and kindness. Chelsea generally works with adult individuals or couples, however she also has experience with adolescents and families. She first began working with couples as a trainee at the Ackerman Institute for the Family. Here she conducted virtual therapy sessions utilizing the Ackerman Relational Approach (ARA). Through utilizing ARA, she created family genograms, analyzed generational trauma, and pinpointed cycles of vulnerability for both parties in the relationship. She maintains an open ear to understand the worldview of the client, and how they are interpreting the problem at hand. She considers her style to be relational, holistic, and client-centered. Chelsea takes pride in being an integrative and creative clinician, who aims to create treatment plans and therapeutic goals as personalized to the client as possible.

Chelsea favors Bowenian and structural family therapy, narrative therapy, emotionally-focused therapy (EFT), and mindfulness techniques. She currently provides remote therapy services, Monday through Thursday, from mornings to evenings.

She received her MA in Social Work from the New York University Silver School of Social Work, and her BA in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
