I work with a unique blend of the tools I gathered along the way of my learning journey. My base line is Somatic Experiencing, which is a body based/felt sense approach. Emotions begin with the body and this is where I start. Shock trauma also gets imprinted in the body's nervous system. Ultimately, as we talk and get to know one another, this is where we converge. I combine psychodynamics/ early attachment theories/ experiential/ transpersonal theories with body awareness. I also help clients renegotiate overwhelming experiences that happened "too fast, too soon and in too much quantity": SE is the cherry on the cake when it comes to trauma resolution. Anxiety/Depression/Stress and Loss are being addressed as we work through attachment to the caregiver and trauma issues. Body awareness and mindfulness are essential tools I share my clients. My goal is to provide tools to help clients self-regulate as we process on the path of healing. Alleviating symptoms is always a priority.

Important Factors for Choosing a Therapist

Therapist and client have to "click". It is hard for a client to sit in front of a therapist for the first time and share his/her most intimate stories. Although this process happens slowly, it is important for the client to sense a good "vibe" from the therapist. If there is mis-attunement, the connection won't happen. That's why I offer to sit with the prospective client for a free mini session if needed. I want to create a non-judgmental atmosphere of emotional intimacy in my sessions. Ultimately the goal of therapy is for the client to be able to feel the range of emotions and stay in the present without "leaving" (dissociating).

What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

In order for a client to renegotiate buried emotional pain, one needs the skills of a good therapist (who acts as a "midwife of the unconscious") but also personal tools to help self-regulate when the therapist is not around. I teach these tools. The session extends at home when the client masters ways to calm down, to self-soothe and to get back to baseline on his/her own. And that's pure joy!

Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed

One would not go to the hospital for a cold or the flu because these ailments can be healed at home with rest, fluids and vitamin C. But for a broken leg, there is no home remedy. A doctor's care is needed. It is the same in psychotherapy: a person can probably manage a relationship split or the loss of a job on their own. But when symptoms of anxiety and depression or grief become debilitating, again, there is no home cure. Professional help should be sought. It is a strength to say: I need help. Men and women have always sought the advice of the shaman or the village elders to resolve their issues. The psychotherapist has taken that role in modern society.
