My Approach to Helping
The therapeutic relationship is considered one of the most important factors in effective therapy. It is important to feel comfortable, safe, and have trust in your therapist. After an initial consultation to see if we are a good fit for each other, and to discuss what you want to get out of therapy, our alliance will begin with the creation of a safe space for you to explore your issues.
Therapy is a journey we embark on together. The process can ultimately be life-changing and incredibly worthwhile, but also heart-breaking as old concepts and ways of being fall away. While this can be a difficult time, it is also exciting to discover what lies beneath repetitive patterns and behaviors that aren’t working for you anymore. I feel the point of therapy is to release what no longer serves you by bringing awareness and understanding to the issues that block you, so you can transform them.
Our therapeutic process will be designed to work for you. Methods like cognitive behavior therapy work very well for some people, but others find more depth-oriented modalities better for them. Depending on your personality and what works best for you, different methods could be used.
But no matter what methods used, my approach is always humanistic and psychodynamic, meaning we are both engaged, involved, and committed to the process of therapy and examining the underlying reasons why certain issues have shown up in your life. We can then explore new ways of looking at them and what to do about them.
