My Approach to Helping

Our unique experiences account for differences in perception. I believe that the process of therapy is enhanced by exploring these differences. We all experience different problems in life and need help to deal with these problems. I am glad that you have taken the first challenging step of seeking help. If you decide to work with me, I will provide you with a safe environment to deal with any issues. Your emotional safety is my priority, and we will progress in treatment at your comfort level. My approach to therapy includes an initial assessment to aid in determining needs and to assist in developing a treatment plan. Because of my personality and extensive professional experience, I develop rapport easily which help in relieving some anxiety related to attending therapy. I will be looking forward to working with you in addressing issues of concern if you choose to work with me.

As a result of my diverse educational and professional background, not only do I specialize in working with diverse populations, but I also help clients who are on psychotropic medications integrate talk therapy and psychopharmacology in addressing mental health issues. I also am able to assist those clients recommended for psychotropic medications make informed decisions regarding medication treatment. Other areas I have expertise in include crisis interventions, anger management, problem solving, and conflict resolutions. I also have extensive training and experience in dealing with multicultural issues. Hence, I understand how different perspectives affect communication. I also understand the importance of validating challenges faced when people are functioning from different perspectives.

My Role as a Therapist

My role as a therapist is to guide you through the therapy process- exploring life experiences, if need be, to try and understand underlying issues of the problem. My goal is to assist you in resolving issues through a collaborative process in a safe environment.

The Duration and Frequency of Therapy

During the first stages of treatment, we develop a treatment plan to address the presenting problem. Your role is crucial in specifying what you expect from therapy. The initial assessment I conduct will aid in assessing treatment needs. Therapy can be short-term or long-term. Short- term treatment is usually six to ten weeks and long-term therapy varies depending on needs and expectations. Frequency of therapy is usually weekly but can be more than once a week or can be biweekly depending on severity of functioning.
