Want to make a change but not sure where to start or how to get there? You are in great company. Most counseling clients begin the same way. We start counseling by exploring your history and current concerns. From there, we develop a set of goals and a plan to attain them. How we get there will depend greatly on you and the issues at hand.
I typically approach treatment from several directions simultaneously, including cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and relational. The cognitive piece involves looking at how you think about things and making adjustments as needed. The behavioral piece looks at what you are doing that may be self-sabotaging and replacing that with healthier behaviors. The emotional piece involves exploring problematic feelings that may be driving unwanted thoughts and behaviors. The relational piece looks at how you interact with people, and we develop strategies for improving that. Depending on what you want to work on, we may work with some or all of these elements.
If this sounds intimidating, that is understandable. The work isn't easy. However, it is rewarding and I will be there right along with you moving at a pace that feels right for you.

What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I made a 180 degree career change because I wanted to have a job that I feel good about. It was a good decision because I really derive great meaning and joy from helping.
What I Usually Need to Know to Help
What have you tried before?
What makes you happy? (If the answer is 'nothing' then we can work on that.)
What makes you afraid?
What gives you hope?
Tell me about your parents and siblings.
How do you escape from pain?
Tell me about being overwhelmed.
Is there love? Do you feel?
How do you get in your own way of happiness?
On the Fence About Going to Therapy?
If you've made it this far, then you owe it to yourself to find someone to talk to.
Had a Negative Therapy Experience?
I hear this frequently, especially from people in couple's counseling. If you have a bad experience then I recommend letting your therapist know so that you and she can discuss. If she isn't responsive or you don't feel safe, then definitely find someone else.
Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed
I believe that personal growth is a lifelong process, not because we are flawed, but because life is challenging. When you are really stuck, seek help from a book, friend, or counselor. When you aren't stuck, just keep working on cultivating and maintaining healthy habits. Your quality of life will reflect your investment.
The Duration and Frequency of Therapy
For most situations, I recommend weekly meetings for the first 4-6 weeks. At that point, we will assess and see if treatment goals are met and we may reduce or discontinue therapy. Of course, it is really what works best for you.
