For more than 16 years, I have been helping adults and teenagers learn to work around the effects of childhood trauma. Whether it's about substance abuse, shopping, self-harm, eating disorders, bad relationships, or other troublesome behavior, we work to build a strategy that identifies the source of the problem.
My approach? Holistic. We tie together the three key elements of your functioning: Beliefs, Body, and Behavior.
We explore the parts of your history that have influenced your life situation right now.
We look at the whole picture: Your levels of physical fitness and how your history has affected your health up until now.
I will teach you how to ground yourself and to apply mindful techniques to manage and get you through the rough spots.
Most importantly, though, we will bring to light all your successes: All the things you did that helped you to survive whatever hardships you experienced.

A few questions about additions: Chemical and Process
Is your use of Alcohol or Another Drug causing problems in family, relationships, or work?
Do you get irritated if someone brings up your drinking or other drug use?
Do you worry excessively about your weight or your appearance?
Do you find yourself reliving unpleasant events in your past and wishing you could change them?
Do you have a teenager you suspect has an eating disorder or is cutting her/himself?
Are you a compulsive shopper, gambler, or relationship seeker?
Do you think you are addicted to sex?
Have you tried repeatedly to change your behavior but nothing works?
These can be effectively treated with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, EMDR for short.
I am trained and proficient in the use of EMDR in helping to empower you over these conditions.
On the Fence About Going to Therapy?
There is no charge for our first session. This is where you and I sit down, discuss your view of your situation, and see if there is potential for collaboration. This is where you decide if you think the relationship is going to work.
How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist
Life happens. I entered into this field in midlife after being fed up with trying to fit into a corporate world. I was like a square block and trying to squeeze into a round hole. If the definition of insanity is repeating a behavior over and over while expecting a different result, well, that pretty much described me. AND a whole lot of others in this life who decided to switch horses.
Gaining knowledge and expertise in the treatment of complex trauma and addictions has resulted in continued self-examination and a commitment to engage in the practices I advocate in my professional life, especially overcoming addictions and being physically fit.
Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work
There are 3 Principles around which I structure my practice:
1. The Past is Always Present.
In all of what we say, do, think, and feel, including all the positive things!
2. The Present is Subject to Change.
Therapy facilitates rethinking our past.
3. We See Things Not as They Are, But as WE are.
Therapy nurtures empathy for others and their points of view.
Therapy ALSO respects and reinforces YOUR point of vies.
My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'
I really dislike labels: The ones used to describe what you "have". On the other hand I take care determine if you might benefit from prescribed medication for Depression or Anxiety and I will readily refer for a medical evaluation to explore that avenue.
