What I Say to People Concerned about the Therapy Process

Often, therapists and counselors ignore a person's goals for his or herself, and count therapeutic success by how many times they can get their client to cry. Crying can be cathartic, but it can also be merely a sign of being re-traumatized. Plus, catharsis is not the goal of psychotherapy, only a helpful component, at times. Our psyche's are like cell membranes. When things around the cell are calm and safe, the pores in the membrane open, and allow things to pass from it, and take in things from outside it. When things become turbulent and unsafe, the pores close up, preventing things from passing back and forth. The only way to create a safe place, where one's psyche feels safe enough to open up, is to be with a therapist who knows this truth, can sense this dynamic, and honor it. I've had over 19 years of training and practice to develop this ability.
