People trust me - they just do. You clients start counseling upset, angry, sad or even desperate - and want most to feel I 'get' you and quickly gain confidence the therapy will really help. I love my work - helping you find your way back to your 'old and best self' to find peace - feeling more contented, maybe even happy. I'm friendly, caring and wise. When an adult feels like s/he isn't living the life s/he wants, partners are upset with each other, or kids and parents are at each others' throats, my job is to help you not just find "tools" but actually experience healing.

People don't want so much to hurt each other as get their needs met. This is what I do - find those needs, and help you get them met more easily, using my compassion, insight and experience.

More Info About My Practice

You are welcome to a free initial phone consultation to see how well I fit your personality and needs, and to further check me out in the first few paid sessions. You do pay me directly, with cash, check PayPal or credit card. For those who want to draw upon insurance, I can provide coded receipts which you can turn in for reimbursement. I'm considered an "out-of-network" provider, except for CCAH-Beacon, which my interns and I do take (if we have openings). Do check with your insurer to find out about your deductible and about whether they'll reimburse you for an "out-of-network" provider. you?re covered. And do be alerted that using insurance means the company will have your diagnosis and treatment on record.

I've treated about 2,400 adults and teenagers over the past 18 years, working for a county mental health agency up near Chico in Northern California, until 2011. There I was exposed to most mental conditions of adults and youth, handling crises of all kinds. Having semi-retired now in Santa Cruz, I have a flexible a part-time practice, enjoying helping adults, couples, parents and teens.

If I am not personally available, I recommend all my three very able interns -- Maggie Wilson, Geoff Ashmun and Shana Trinchero. They are indeed younger than I am (I'm 69 and they're in their 40s). Yet they're by no means naive newbies.
I chose them carefully for their fine minds, maturity, intuition and caring attitude. They've all had valuable experience with clients. Of course I will be supervising them in detail about your case, and we will all be contributing to your treatment.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

I work with couples in trouble (or ones who want to stay on track), as well as men and women who just feel confused, lost, sad or anxious. With the couples (as well as parents with teens), I have fun helping them restore their love, listen better to each other, and get rid of the interaction patterns that are causing their distress.

With couples, adults and teens, I am especially good at reducing the terrible effects of trauma (PTSD) on life, that make people feel alienated, angry, fearful, avoidant, depressed and anxious. I use not only my caring personality, but a special technique called EMDR which goes way below the surface to really alleviate the underlying damage. We can actually change your upsetting memories into much calmer ones, which makes people much happier.

So for everybody, instead of an anxious mess, life can start feeling more like a spring day, with the return of ease, warmth, self-confidence, energy and good spirit, maybe even some real joy!
