Data from the 2016 State of Mental Health in America survey, compiled by Mental Health America, indicates that hundreds of thousands of young people in the state of California are currently experiencing severe mental and behavioral health issues. According to the survey, approximately 327,000 minors in the state have been affected by at least one major depressive episode in the past 12 months, while 224,000 youths are currently experiencing severe major depressive episodes. Illicit drug and alcohol use is also a major concern among the younger population, with roughly 182,000 adolescents displaying dependence on these substances.

Due to the prevalence of these issues, many parents and guardians in Southern California have opted to find a child psychiatrist or a child psychologist in Los Angeles. Child psychologists and other mental health experts are able to help toddlers, young children, and teenagers deal with a wide range of issues that may affect them negatively. Some of the situations, concerns, and maladaptive behaviors that may be addressed by a child psychologist or a child psychiatrist include:

Child counseling services from a trained child psychologist may help children get a better grasp of the issues they may be experiencing and the factors which generally contribute to them. Cognitive behavioral therapy, for example, may then be used to help children in treatment transform negative behaviors and thoughts into positive ones.

While child counseling services may be provided by a child psychologist, clinical social worker, or a child psychiatrist in Los Angeles, only a child psychiatrist may prescribe medication for young people in treatment. In many cases, effective child therapy helps affected children to manage their issues and lead healthier and happier lives.
