My Approach to Helping
My approach can best be described as, €œget out of your own way€ therapy. I integrate the qualities of caring and compassion into my work. While relying on both short and longer-term techniques, I never follow a cookie-cutter approach to psychotherapy, since each person is different and has different needs. My work is practical, interactive, and solution focused. I believe in using a motivating and empowering approach to help my clients feel confident, be better able to address their issues, and to learn new ways to think about their choices and behaviors so that they make healthier decisions and create better outcomes. I provide support and practical feedback as I work collaboratively with my clients to help them find solutions, get relief, and find peace in themselves and in their lives.

My Therapy Focus

The focus of my practice is helping individuals and familes suffering from addiction and substance abuse disorders. I typically meet the client where they are in their motivation for change and we collaboratively set goals and plans for treatment. I also utilize sober coaching when it fits the needs of my clients. This includes: finding support groups, daily balanced living, a job which fits the clients current needs, coping skills and relapse prevention counseling. Much of my work with family members includes education, codependency, helping them find resources for themselves and their loved one, supporting reintegration once the addict returns from treatment and identifying healthy boundaries.

How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist

Most definitely!! I once felt very hopeless over my own substance abuse issues. Having walked in similar shoes as many of my clients, I have a unique ability to be compassionate yet honest and direct. With many years in recovery now, I have a great knowledge of what it takes to stay sober through life's difficulties. I am often able to integrate my own painful experiences in my work with clients. This allows for a much quicker trusting relationship between client and therapist. In my work with families, my personal experience is very useful. I have a very credible background in understanding their loved ones illogical and self destructive behavior. Often times family members hold many of the cards to their addict being willing to seek help. I help the family members to change some of their behaviors inorder to create motivation for change. Addiction is a unique issue and it needs to be met with understanding and great empathy. What I love most about my work is, once a client recovers their abilities in life can be endless. Watching this transformation occur is an honor and a privilege.
