My Approach to Helping
You've been searching for someone who gets you - not your grandma's therapist. Perhaps you're feeling tired of your struggles, overwhelmed or thinking will I ever feel comfortable in my skin? The voice in your head may be saying that you're not good enough as you compare yourself to others, getting more anxious or depressed. You're not sure where to turn or what to do but you know it's time for a change. You don't need to feel like this forever. YOU can break the cycle of trauma or abuse. You CAN find clarity and a better understanding of your thoughts and emotions. Working with the right therapist brings a feeling of safety, support, healing, and empowerment. There is hope.
A board certified, integrative and holistic approach to therapy can help quiet your inner critic, find light in the darkness, release blocks and trauma, and give you tools that will help with anxiety, anger and stress. Combining evidence-based interventions such as Positive Psychology, Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy with meditation, aromatherapy, and natural elements, assists in treating the whole person. Emotional well-being is only one part of the whole, along with physical and spiritual balance.
Working together, as a team, in a safe environment is key to your healing journey. My style is direct and without judgement, empathic and encouraging, offering guidance when needed. You will leave our session feeling supported - receiving feedback, resources andor tools. My intention is that you continue to make progress long after you stop therapy. I additionally support clients that reach out between sessions in a limited but constructive capacity, if needed. Please contact me to schedule a free, no obligation, 30-minute consultation to see if we're the right fit.

LEARNING AND USING DBT SKILLS GROUP
This is a closed group, with a minimum commitment of 12 weeks-groups. We’ve all found ourselves in a crisis, in a conflict with someone important in our lives or overwhelmed by emotion and circumstances. It can be difficult to maintain emotional balance while figuring out just how to navigate through those stressful times. It takes skills to solve life’s problems while enduring intense emotion.
In DBT, four skills modules are designed to specifically assist individuals in better managing behavioral, emotional and cognitive instability. Their intent is to help people with problems with anger, episodic depression, irritability or anxiety, intense or chaotic relationships, impulsivity, stress and feelings of emptiness. New skills are presented each week and homework is assigned for individuals to practice during the week.
The skills modules include mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Mindfulness is designed to teach a person how to focus their mind and attention. Distress tolerance is centered on accepting the current situation and finding ways to survive and tolerate the moment without engaging in problematic behavior. Emotion regulation skills include learning to identify and label current emotions, identifying obstacles to changing emotions, reducing emotional reactivity, increasing positive emotions, and changing emotions. Finally, interpersonal effectiveness skills teach effective strategies for asking for what one needs, saying no, and coping with interpersonal conflict.
PARENTS OF ADDICTS SUPPORT GROUP
This is an intimate and open group that meets twice monthly to support parents and caregivers of those suffering with addiction. Tools and resources are shared in a safe, nonjudgmental space.
When you love an addict, life becomes incredibly difficult. Addiction is a scary disease that leaves the addict out of control and impacts every part of the person’s family as well. When your loved one is addicted you may start to blame yourself, feel depressed or alone, or experience shame.
Support groups for parents and families of addicts are valuable because they can help you get a better understanding of what addiction is. Addiction is a very complex disease that impacts the brain and in turn, influences the behavior and actions as well as the thoughts of the addicted person. When you’re surrounded by other people who have experienced and understand addiction, it can give you helpful information as well.
Often people with family members who are addicts can experience mental health issues such as anxiety or depression as a result, and a support group can provide you with emotional balance and support. You can also learn how to work on changing unhealthy family patterns.
Sliding scale is available and space is limited, so registration is required. Please call 718-795-2675 for more information.
