My Approach to Helping
Do you feel crazy busy, stressed out, just not knowing how to get out of the rat race? Are you experiencing life transition stress, depression or anxiety related to chronic health issues or obesity? Is the relationship between you and your spouse or partner strained or needing help with communication skills? Do world events, daily news, and social media just add another layer of depression and or anxiety? YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
People are often hesitant to see a therapist, afraid of the stigma that there is something wrong with them. I hate to break it to you, but none of us have our stuff together! Yes, we all have our own struggles, some people just hide it better than others. Perhaps your life looks ideal on the outside, but you're still left feeling unsatisfied or feel like a fraud. Seeing a therapist does not mean you are weak or flawed. Everyone needs that extra support from a non-judgement, no-hidden-agenda professional at some time or other. Even therapists need a therapist!
Many clients seeking counseling have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) such as abuse, neglect, parental divorce or substance abuse, or exposure to domestic violence, to name just a few. These can manifest in adulthood as poor health, mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, relationship issues and many other ways. I can work with you to identity and address these issues.
We begin therapy by me getting to know you, the issues you face, and the goals you want to reach. You'll get to know me too so we can decide if it feels like a good fit. My approach is non-judgmental, compassionate, and curious. I have several ways we can start addressing your issues - you make a choice that feels right for you. Some example are: processing emotions, problem-solving, or reviewing your family history. We will work collaboratively to help you achieve the changes you want for yourself.
I am honored to be a therapist. My approach is strength-based, taking into account your life experiences, resiliency, talents, emotional and physical resources. I believe we all have an inner wisdom, but sometimes it gets buried. My job is to help your discover or rediscover that wisdom and provide a healing, therapeutic space for you to do that. Although training and experience is important, I believe a heart-to-heart connection between the therapist and client is where the healing takes place.
I have the education, extensive training, many years of life experiences, but one thing is know is the best teachers are you, the client. I am fascinated by the resilience, strength, and hope that people have despite not having an easy path in life. People need a safe space to share their emotions, history and challenges, sometimes for the first time, without feeling judgment. This sounds like, and is, serious business, but that doesn't mean we can't share a laugh once in a while. After all, it is the best medicine.
I started an online therapy practice to help relieve some of the stress around accessing mental health services. Online counseling is very much like face-to-face counseling without the traffic, parking, and the extra time and money involved in getting where you are going. Online counseling offers services brought to you in the comfort of your home or even in your closed office door during lunch time. I use HIPAA compliant technology with miltary grade encryption to protect the confidentiality of the sessions.

I love working with women who believe at the menopausal stage of life their best years are behind them. In reality, we all have options for reinventing, redefining and reclaiming ourselves.
As an animal lover, I know the grief of losing a pet family member. The void left can feel huge and overwhelming because they were the fabric of your daily life and routine. Sometimes other people just don't get it, and you might hear "Well it's a ____, you can just get another one". We know it's not that simple or easy. That is why I help others who lost a beloved pet in working through the grief associated with their loss. Are you a pet owner in the process of losing your best friend, or struggling with a death? Give me a call.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
Over 12 years ago I read "The China Study" which presents extensive studies that show how a Whole FoodPlant Based (WFPB) lifestyle can prevent, treat, and even reverse chronic illnesses. I was blown away and slowly changed the way I ate to a WFPB way of living. Although I didn't have any illnesses that I was aware of, I knew I didn't want to get any. I did find many issues that I thought were hereditary, or I just had to live with, disappeared after the changes I made. Prior to this, I always struggled to maintain my weight. After switching over (which took me several years) I find I can eat as much as I want and my weight does not fluctuate.
I started to become aware that often clients would be struggling with anxiety and depression related to living with a chronic illness (diabetes, high blood pressure...). I suddenly really understood the mindbody connection! Although I had figured out how to convert to a WFPB lifestyle, it was all by trial and error. Feeling ill equipped to help my clients, I went back to school and became a Certified Nutritional Health Coach receiving my Credentials from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York, NY.
For the past six years, I have been helping clients focus on improving their health and huge changes can take place in about six months rather than the years it took me! No drugs, no "nutritional shakes, no expensive supplements, no counting calories or points - just delicious, healthy food. Most often the first thing people will notice is increased energy, improved mood, joint pain starts to go away, and the numbers will start dropping - blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, weight... No wonder depression improves. Contact me if you are interested and we can set up a complimentary health history consultation.
