Growing up in Japan with a disabled sibling, I saw my family deal with many difficult issues, including discrimination, isolation, marital problems, bullying, multiple moves, economic challenges and constant fighting with the school system. My siblings suffering and my familys struggles were painful to witness, but I gained deep respect and compassion for those going through difficult times in their lives. It also fueled my passion to see people empowered to become whatever they envision themselves to be.

Feeling helpless to do something about my familys situation motivated me to enter a helping profession when I grew up. After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Social Work at the University of Washington, I earned a Master's degree in Social Work, specializing in health care and mental health.
Much of my early work experience was in hospital settings, including Evergreen Hospital, Providence Hospital and University of Washington Medical Center Emergency Department. I conducted psychiatric evaluations in acute emergency-room and long-term outpatient settings. Working with chronically ill patients and their families gave me first-hand knowledge of the caregiving process and what caregivers go through. This experience continues to be of value in my current work with elderly and ill patients and their spouses.
Working in Washington states foster care system was very rewarding. My role was to support family reunification by facilitating therapeutic visitations, assessing childrens needs, providing resources, and empowering parents to create a healthy environment in which their children could return. Working with children from difficult family circumstances deepened my understanding of the problems children have; and how, within the family system, the behavior of one member, whether parent or child, affects the well-being of the entire family unit. I am committed to supporting and strengthening every aspect of healthy family relationships.
I work with school-aged children and teens (and their parents) to alleviate situations such as bullying, poor self-esteem, body image and weight concerns, step-parent and step-sibling issues, communications difficulties, and problems related to over-use of the internet and video gaming.
For younger children, two to seven years old, with emotional or behavioral challenges, I use PCIT (Parent Child Interaction Therapy), an innovative play therapy that includes the childs biological, adoptive or foster parent(s) and focuses on the improvement of parent/caregiver-child interactions.
In addition to working with children, teens and adults in a therapeutic setting, I work with acute situations and crises at school, home and in the workplace.
My therapeutic approach, based on a unique melding of therapy modalities, focuses on a persons strengths their ability to bounce back from difficulties, and to grow and change for the better and takes place in a welcoming, supportive, non-judgmental environment. I strive to always be transparent, direct, empathetic and genuine with my clients.
I practice with knowledge and understanding of cultural and racial diversity and work to see people thrive, no matter what conditions they were born into; and advocate for people of color, interracial couples and families.
My goal is to support individuals, couples and families as they go through the therapeutic process for a range of issues, including: depression, anxiety, mood disorders, social phobias, grief and loss, trauma, addiction, eating disorders, marital and family issues, anger management, attention and learning problems, OCD and other issues. Many of my clients say they feel strengthened and encouraged by this process.
