How a therapist thinks about a problem is how they attempt to lend a hand to their clients. Some therapist think of problems as residing in the individual. Some think it is a problem from the past. Some think it is a medical problem. I think it is the sum of all these parts. I have many years of experience and training in Bowen Family Systems Theory which looks at the individual within the larger context of the family, work and social relationship systems. These pressures can get people emotionally cornered, stuck or in a repetitive cycle. I lend a hand to thinking in new ways about the current problems such as anxiety, marital issues, parenting, depression, illness, work place difficulties and behavioral problems. Every problem is "complicated" but it is up to the individual to do something different with the "same ol, same ol". The goal is to be able to think and act differently which can be liberating and frees the individual to be themselves again. Individuals usually start weekly but often decrease their sessions quickly to every other week as they move towards managing their lives in between sessions better.

More Info About My Practice

I accept some insurance, but insurance companies are very limited in their coverage of relationship issues. Evening hours are available. Sliding fee scale is also available.

My Therapy Focus

I think it is important to know the theoretical orientation of the therapist. How a therapist thinks about a problem directs their comments and approaches. My theoretical orientation is Bowen family systems theory which addresses the internal world of the individual AND the relationship issues between people.

Theoretical Influences that Guide My Work

I have had the privilege of working with two nationally known family psychiatrists, being asked to teach family practice residents about how families work and presenting on a national and regional level. I also am a volunteer director of a nonprofit that educates and trains other helping professionals ( therapist, doctors, clergy, etc) about how relationships work.
