My Approach to Helping
Most likely you’re not looking for a therapist because you feel so awesome you want to pay someone to talk about it. I know that certainly wasn’t the case for me — I first sought therapy because I was in a ton of pain (and not just the physical kind). If that sounds familiar, first off, welcome. Second, although suffering is painful, sometimes it is the only thing that can motivate us to make the positive changes necessary for true happiness.
Although it might be external circumstances that caused you to look for a therapist, I believe it is the internal work that sets us free. If we are waiting for people to act differently towards us, the world to be fairer, our boss to recognize our genius, etc., then we are giving away control of our happiness.
Many of us are familiar with the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that states, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” What Mr. Emerson doesn’t say is that there is a lot of junk that can cause disruption along the way. Have you ever set out on a journey, such as a road trip somewhere, a car full of kids, and everyone is super excited to be going; the GPS says it’s only going to take you a few hours to get there, the weather is nice, traffic and construction are supposed to be at a minimum? Sounds perfect, right? But instead of having a nice smooth road ahead, you encounter hills and valleys, twists and turns, potholes, traffic, missed exits, and countless other disruptions. By the time you’ve gotten to your destination everyone is tired, hungry, cranky, (hangry) and no one is having fun.
Some people can encounter these road trip disruptions and navigate them effortlessly. Others, however, have a more troublesome time and their internal GPS is stuck on the “rerouting” screen. I believe this is where therapy can help. Whether you come as a teenager, parent, couple, or adult, I offer a safe, judgment-free space where you will receive emotional support and guidance to help you traverse through the chaos. Whether you want to better understand your past, need support in the present, or are struggling to make decisions about your future, I am here to guide you on your journey. I hope to help you discover and strengthen your natural ability to relate and share, thereby gaining the insight and strength necessary to tackle whatever life throws your way, upgrading your GPS as you go, and achieve the emotional health you and your family deserve.
You might be initially hesitant to seek help and support for personal matters, but when you do, you can feel confident that you are taking a courageous first step towards getting to a better place and being a better you.
My practice specializes in treating individuals, couples, and families, and through years of experience, I’m confident that no problem is too great to overcome. Through therapy, there is always a way to address the issues you face and learn ways to cope that will help you both right now and in the future.
We all embark on the journey of life at the same starting point. We travel down the road before us, trying to carve out a path that will lead us to the life that will bring us joy. However, sometimes that path leads us off the course of happiness and fulfillment, and into some dark corners. Whether you’re stuck in the woods of anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide and self-harm, relationship issues, or perfectionism, it is possible to get out of the dark places and back into the sun. I know it feels daunting now, but that is why you are here.
Here at DisruptedKC, I will work with you to help you develop the strategies you need to get back on the path that leads to happiness and success. Together, we will work to address the issues you are facing and come through on the other side with an alternative way of thinking, and confidently take on a new direction in life.
Together, we will work closely to analyze what struggles you are facing and their underlying causes, and try to change the behavior and thought patterns that are keeping you from being the person you want to be.
If you’re ready to get back on the path that leads to the happier times in your life, then you’ve come to the right place. Contact me today so we can work to get you back on course.
