I believe that people are the experts on their own lives, and that they don't come to counseling to be told what to do. I strictly adhere to working on goals that are identified by you, not by me. I help you gain the tools and resources you need to make decisions that are right for your life and that reflect your values. I use an approach that helps you maintain tolerance and acceptance of the difficult experiences in life, rather than avoiding them. I teach mindfulness and use yoga in my counseling practice as we agree and see fit. In the initial session, I will work to understand some of your background and history, then we will develop goals for your counseling sessions. Depending on your needs and comfort level, I use short guided meditations to help you stay present in the moment. I use trauma-sensitive practices, with continued awareness of your past experiences, triggers, and emotional reactions to avoid emotional overwhelm. Sometimes, when clients are interested in yoga, I will use simple stretches and breathing techniques to help you process your emotional experience. If you are a more experienced yoga practitioner, we may use one of the adjacent yoga studios to spread out and do more movement. The direction of therapy is always up to you, and I work to respect any cultural or ideological differences between us.

More Info About My Practice
My rates are $150 for the initial session, followed by $115 per hour. I accept some insurance plans, and can provide superbills to clients wishing to file with their insurance for out-of-network benefits. I usually recommend at least 6 sessions for most clients, at which time we will reassess goals and decide whether continued counseling could be helpful.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I love being available as a listening ear and sounding board for clients. So often in our society, we are not allowed to be truly transparent with our feelings, for fear of looking weak, or offending someone, or annoying others with our internal "stuff." But the beauty of counseling is that all of your "stuff" is welcome in the room. All the baggage and the judgments and the evaluations. All of the history, the traumas, the darkness. All of the laughter and joy. It's all welcome. And it's up to me as the therapist to synthesize the information you bring me... all the thoughts and feelings, all the worries and concerns, all the strengths and triumphs... into something that, together, we are able to make meaning of. This is the creative part of the counseling process. It's the spontaneous moments of putting it all together and reflecting it back to you in a way that provides perspective and insight that I most enjoy.
