What I Usually Need to Know to Help
I need to know the person's inner beliefs and values about themselves and their existence. Through exploration in this area, I come to a deeper understanding of the person and I connect with them while building a trusting therapeutic relationship. Within this relationship, I focus treatment that will allow the person to grow and reach their potential and assist them along their journey in their life-whether it is to find inner peace and happiness, to achieve interpersonal resolutions, or to transition to life's changes. I need to see their world through their eyes and walk in their path for a moment, so that I can truly be person-centered and be effective as their therapist.
Importance of the Client-Therapist Alliance
The therapeutic relationship is the most essential factor in determining effectiveness of treatment. It is through this vessel that the therapeutic interventions are created and implemented. The person needs to feel connected to their therapist, that the therapist truly gets who they are as a person and what their needs are. The person needs to trust that the therapist is non-judgmental, is present at all times, is genuine and authentic, and that they model what they teach.
