My Approach to Helping
I strongly believe in the healing and growth potential that comes from psychotherapy and a positive therapeutic relationship. I know from personal and professional experience that each person's history, needs, and strengths are unique. In therapy, I develop a deep understanding of a person, and build a dynamic working relationship with them, on which to base effective and meaningful solution focused therapeutic work. I am confident in people's ability to resolve problems with their emotions and behaviors, to improve their relationships with themselves and others, and to thrive. When a person is confronting problems related to a loss of functioning due to disruptive symptoms and is looking to improve coping, I use Cognitive Behavioral strategies and offer EMDR to decrease unwanted thoughts and behaviors, restore functioning, and help people meet goals. In other cases, it is important to explore traumas and problems to heal one's self esteem and improve their relationships. In family relationship counseling, I focus on the development of mutual understanding, developing compassion and emotional safety in the relationship, and developing more satisfying communication skills. I am privileged and committed to supporting and guiding people on their journey toward self awareness and deep change in the therapy process.

Areas of specialty include treatment of trauma, such as childhood abuse, DV, and loss, depression, and co-dependency and other relational problems. I also offer short term, solution focused therapy for individuals facing the discomfort and functional impairment related to anxiety and panic disorders. I have had repeated success helping people decrease their fears and take back their personal control in this area. I use evidenced based trauma interventions, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), cognitive behavioral and mindfulness techniques to help people develop understanding, coping, and restore their functioning. In addition to helping my clients build skills in a solution focused manner when that is what is needed, I take a relational and personal approach with each of my clients, even those that are doing short term work.

Seeking professional support through therapy can be anxiety provoking and uncomfortable. The thought and anticipation of therapy can seem unnatural. But in fact it is wise and brave to seek out a professional to help one improve their own lives. That said, not all therapists are a good fit for all people. I believe you know you have found a good match with a therapist, when you feel the therapist is committed to understanding your concerns and your process in each session and is in a collaboration with you to investigate and resolve your personal goals and concerns that you have brought into therapy.
