My Approach to Helping
Is your child or teen acting differently than they used to? Do you feel like something is going on inside of them, but they won't open up to you? Are they acting out in ways that are disruptive at school, home or in life in general? If your attempts to get through to them leave you feeling more and more frustrated and lost, sometimes bringing in a caring professional can help. Although I work with people of all ages and backgrounds, I specialize in working with children/teens. One of the reasons I do this is because I love kids. Another is because I believe that many struggles adults have are connected to their experiences growing up. I believe that if children/adolescents can get the help they need during their youth, they have a much better chance of fewer issues later in life.
More Info About My Practice
I have provided counseling for people of all ages, from 5 to 92, and also have experience as a life skills coach. My previous career was in the entertainment/music industries, so I am well-equipped to provide support to those working in those fields. I am also able to integrate musical interventions into my work, which can be a powerful way to process emotions and can be especially helpful with young people.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I have worked with children and adolescents in some capacity most of my life: as a school mental health counselor, a counselor and childhood/parenting educator at a community clinic, a music instructor, an English/music teacher at a home for orphaned children/adolescents, and in the children's ministry at my church. Whether you are looking for someone to work directly with your child, to walk alongside you in the challenges of parenting and/or to work with your family as a whole, I bring a wealth of experience to this area.
My Therapy Focus
My approach, even when working with children/teens/adults individually, is to look at the context of the family as a system. I am not here to blame, but rather, to get to the bottom of what is going on. Like a tree, I believe that in order to change the fruit, we need to look at the root. You can pick every orange off an orange tree, but unless you change the root, it will just keep growing oranges. I believe that with the help of therapy, different fruit can begin to develop.
