My Approach to Helping
Hello! Let me start by congratulating you on your commitment to change. I know both professionally and personally that finding a counselor that meets your needs is not easy, but you’re persevering and that bodes well for a happier and healthier you!
I have been practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor for nearly 10 years and the three most important aspects of building a productive therapeutic relationship are listening, respect and starting with simple changes.
1) Listening may seem like an ancient art form these days as we live in a culture that is so excited to respond. I have found that my strong active listening skills foster open, relaxed connections with clients, which allows us to more quickly focus on what brought you into therapy in the first place.
2) Respect is a form of acceptance and caring that supports a judgment free space. I respect your beliefs, your world views, and your experiences, but most importantly, I respect how you feel about them.
3) Keep it simple! Starting with simple goals and simple changes is the best way to break old habits and build on our strengths. Even small changes, particularly as it pertains to taking care of yourself, can have an immediate impact on how you feel.
