My Approach to Helping

“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination”., Carl Rogers.

If there was any curiosity about my style of therapy, then I hope that Rogers has given you some clues. One of the most valuable experiences in life is when a person can experience change, in the face of adversity. Helping others to realize that this change is possible, has been one of the greatest rewards of being a therapist. Inspired by Rogers all those years ago in graduate school, my approach has always been person-centered, while utilizing CBT interventions and occasional strength-based strategies in therapy. I have found these approaches to be most effective in moving people forward in the therapeutic process. Once in treatment, I create a safe space where you can be vulnerable, with no judgment. Through empathy, some light humor, transparency, and accountability, I will meet you where you are and lead you towards success. Once a person understands that the journey towards wellness is a process, they are then open look at their issues as transient, rather than permanent. This is where hope is realized and where healing begins. Being part of this process often validates my reason for becoming a therapist. However, it could have been otherwise.

Coming from London, England many years ago, I had all intentions of moving to the United States to pursue a career in Teaching. I successfully obtained a bachelor’s degree in Education, with a minor in Psychology from Pace University. After graduation, I happily accepted the position as a teaching assistant and a substitute teacher, while I obtained my teacher certification. However, through working in the school district for 5 years, I found myself being drawn to meet the emotional needs of the individual student, rather than the needs of the class. This is where my teaching career ended and my career in mental health began. I eventually went on to obtain my master’s degree in Counseling from Mercy College, followed by my license in mental health counseling.

My experience in the field of mental health has varied over the past 18 years; from community social work to coordinating a youth program and providing mental health support to the incarcerated population. I also established and coordinated counseling services in my local church. Through working with the congregation, I realized that there was a great need for mental health services in my neighboring community. My private practice was birthed out of this need and I have been privileged to work in this capacity over the years. Given the many challenges brought on by the pandemic, working remotely has become the norm for a lot of professionals, including myself. However, while it has its challenges, remote therapy has offered many people the opportunity to gain access to therapy, where in-person visits are not possible. The past two years have only strengthened my resolve to help people get back to the best version of themselves and to let them know that it is time to heal.
