Mental Health in Decatur

Access to mental health care is a major concern in DeKalb County. Individuals with mental health issues often end up in jail instead of appropriate treatment programs. According to the county sheriff, DeKalb County Jail is the largest provider of mental health services in the region. Between 15 and 20 percent of inmates have a mental health issue.

Since 2001, the county has been operating a Misdemeanor Mental Health Court to help reroute individuals with mental health concerns away from jail and into treatment. Individuals who enter the program must adhere to the treatment protocol, which typically involves medication and group therapy. Those who successfully complete the program have their charges dismissed.
