Looking for a therapist is often a daunting process. I have found that reaching out to a therapist who can immediately put one at ease sets the stage for developing a safe relationship in which positive change can occur. In my 20+ years of experience as a board certified nurse psychotherapist, I have used this principle to guide me when embarking on a relationship with a new client. Once a safe, supportive environment is created, I use my training and experience to help clients achieve the change they are seeking in their lives. My approach is to help the client develop a deeper level of self understanding and acceptance; understand the influences of the past on the present; and finally to help the client develop effective strategies to move forward in life. To help accomplish this, I am interactive, warm, and non-judgmentally supportive. As a therapist who is also a nurse, I integrate understanding of the effects of the client's physical, social, and family environments on his/her wellbeing. This is important whether the problem causing one distress is of a emotional or physical origin. It is a holistic approach to psychotherapy which takes into account the profound connection between mind and body. Finally, I also work extensively with stress management and with people who have been diagnosed with challenging medical conditions. People with physical issues often need someone who can help them integrate the complexities of their condition with their sense of self and lifestyle. I intervene to accomplish this by working closely with their medical doctor to help them optimize their participation in treatment, reduce stress, become educated about their disease process and feel in control of their life again.
