My Approach to Helping

Are you going through a difficult time? Feeling anxious or depressed? Dissatisfied with your relationships or where you are in your life? Do you feel overwhelmed by thoughts or emotions that you can't fix and can't make go away and don't know how to deal with? This is not the way things have to be, and you don't have to figure it out alone. There is a way out of the maze of fear or frustration or anger or sadness or pain you are in. What helps is to have someone to accompany you, someone who has a map and knows the territory.

My office is a safe place to figure out, discover and explore what you really think and want and feel -- knowing that in the time we're together, all of your thoughts and feelings are welcomed and honored. On the other side of what you're going through today is a world of life, possibility and good feeling that is your birthright as a human being, no matter how many difficulties you are facing or how much cynicism and negativity and even cruelty the world may have thrown at you. Let me help you reach that new sense of yourself, and what is possible for you, that you truly deserve.

More Info About My Practice

Aside from my work with individual clients, I'm proud to be a practitioner of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, the most researched couples therapy in the world, which has been clinically proven to help more than 70 percent of distressed couples re-connect to their love and feel safe and secure with each other again. Why Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy? Because it's all about emotions, isn't it? Why else would we do something as crazy as committing to love and live with someone for a lifetime? This isn't about men becoming more "sensitive," it's about having one person with whom you feel loved and accepted for who you are. All people -- women and men -- need that. But people fall into patterns with their spouses or significant others that cause them to constantly feel insecure in their relationships. Emotionally Focused Therapy rebuilds the bond between you and eventually makes it stronger than it's ever been before.

I strongly welcome gay and lesbian clients, and any male or female clients who have suffered for not fitting into traditional stereotypes of what it means to be a "man" or a "woman."

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With

As with couples, my way of working with individuals mostly deals with emotions. I've found that people, most of all, need someone caring and real whom they feel safe to talk to about anything and everything. After that, they need someone to help them through the difficult and confusing emotions inside, so they can come to a place of possibility and clarity. My experience is that when the heart feels good, the head can figure out what it needs to figure out.
But for people who have ADHD, the head can't figure it out. People with ADHD process things differently and work twice as hard as everyone else to do what other people find easy. This often leads to terrible pain, misunderstanding and rock-bottom self-esteem. I can help! I am a specialist in working with people with ADHD. I understand ADHD from the inside out. Together we can figure out how your ADHD "works," and create ways to go around it. You don't have to deal with it (or having a spouse who has it) alone. Together we can focus on what you need to do to succeed, to go from a life of frustration, chaos and "stuckness" to a life of fulfillment and success.

Groups I Work With

I work with all adults and couples. But I especially work with people who feel a great deal of anxiety, or who are plagued with obsessive thoughts, or who have difficulties in relationships. I work with a lot of people, both men and women and all sexual orientations, who want a corrective emotional experience with a man, and with men who want to experience and have a role model for a more open and emotionally connected way of being a man. I do a lot of work with Adult Children of Alcoholics, those who are in recovery, and people who have had childhood trauma. And I am one of the few therapists in Maryland who focuses on the very special needs of adults with ADHD, especially of the Predominantly Inattentive type, helping them both individually and with their partners or spouses.
