More Info About My Practice
I truly love psychology! I have dedicated my life to learning the best ways to help people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. I have over 9 years of advanced education, formal training, and professional experience in the field of psychology. I am originally from Southern Nevada, but began my psychology training in the Las Vegas area by working with children and adolescents who had experienced traumatic events while I attended UNLV. It was during this time that my love of psychology flourished, particularly my passion for working with survivors of trauma. During my graduate training at the University of Indianapolis, I specialized in adult psychopathology and psychotherapy during which time I worked in a community mental health clinic, private practice, and VA Medical Centers providing general mental health care to adults, couples, and families. My specialized training and experience provided a solid foundation for my internship and residency where I treated Veterans who experienced traumatic events, including combat and sexual assault, and other anxiety disorders. Over the years, I have developed numerous clinical and administrative projects such as helping survivors of sexual assault regain control over their sexual functioning and developing a comprehensive framework for providing services to many diverse cultural and racial groups. My theoretical orientation, education, research experiences, and clinical experiences provide me with a unique skill set for understanding and addressing the many needs of adults experiencing mental health concerns. Some of my favorite things in therapy include exposure-based interventions for anxiety and trauma disorders, working with individuals who identify as transgender, and providing sex therapy to individuals and couples.
I continue to regularly attend classes and workshops because I am always looking for more ways to understand and help my clients as well as advocate for those who are often unable to advocate for themselves. For example, I am currently in the process of completing my sex therapist certification through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Additionally, I serve as the Secretary for the Executive Board of the Nevada Psychological Association. I am a licensed clinical psychologist in both Washington and Nevada and a member of the American Psychological Association, the Nevada Psychological Association, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. I truly look forward to meeting new individuals, learning about their past and present, and developing a collaborative way to help them recover and take back control of their future. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, trying new sushi locations in the area, and practicing my nail art skills (my polish collection is bordering on unhealthy at this point). Oh, another little tidbit about me is that I'm a bit of a geek, which might help explain the Star Wars and Harry Potter quotes.
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
It is my goal to provide you with a safe and supportive environment to bravely confront and resolve the circumstances impacting your life. Together, we will develop the best possible strategy to address your specific needs. I offer therapy, assessment, and consultation services to individuals, couples, and organizations. My practice emphasizes diversity, acceptance, and individualized treatment. My specialties include the treatment of trauma, anxiety, and sexual concerns. I have worked in a variety of settings and have specialized experience working with military service members, Veterans, and their families, the LGBTQA community, first responders & police officers, millennials, young professionals, members of geek culture, the BDSM/Kink/Fetish community, and current & former sex workers.
My Therapy Focus
I specialize in Evidence-Based Practices. This means I use assessment and treatment methods that have been well researched, are based on science, and have been shown through clinical research to be effective. These types of treatments are collaborative and involve active involvement of us both. I have a cognitive-behavioral theoretical orientation which means I believe behaviors and beliefs are directly related to presenting concerns. My role in therapy is to help you identify, challenge, and adjust unhelpful beliefs and behaviors. My approach focuses on YOU having an active voice in therapy. The treatment outcomes of this approach have been found to significantly decrease distress, improve overall functioning, and maintain gains for many years after treatment concludes.
