My Approach to Helping
My approach aims to help people who feel stuck. I believe that even when we feel stuck, we are constantly changing. We may not be changing the way we want (like becoming more stuck), but we are changing nevertheless. As a result, every moment is a new opportunity to continue old patterns or try out something new. I will work with you to better understand how it is you feel stuck, how that has impacted your life, and where you want to go from here. Together, we will use those understandings to explore the possibilities you see in front of you and keep an eye out for others that might be hiding in plain sight.
We often get so accustomed to our patterns that we assume they are teaching us the same lesson as when they first started. I will invite you to revisit your patterns - by talking, playing, or feeling through them - with a more open perspective to consider whether there might be a new lesson to learn about what you need in order to feel more comfortable within your own skin and your surroundings. I will then invite you to practice however you want to be living in a safe and supportive environment.
Among the various approaches to doing therapy, my primary reference points are existential and humanistic therapies. These therapies both assume that the key to successful therapy comes from how you and I interact together. As we learn how to trust each other and talk about how we do and do not feel comfortable within our conversations, it will become easier to consider relating similarly with other people in your life and with yourself.
