My Approach to Helping

Welcome! I’m so glad you decided to level up on purpose! By that, I mean your incredible sense of self-worth has led you to care for your most valuable asset and most crucial instrument to your making it through this time: your mental wealth. With that, the outcome of your treatment depends largely on your willingness to engage in this process, which may, at times, result in considerable discomfort.

As a licensed professional counselor, I hope to utilize my knowledge of life and behavioral sciences to empower individuals, strengthen families and help build stronger communities. I have gained much insight through my own personal experiences and educational opportunities. I have studied and published in the areas of physics, biological research, medicine, and substance use. My experience includes individual and group therapy in inpatient and partial hospitalization settings, community agencies, court-mandated and state-funded clients, and private practice. Contractually, I also perform case management for clients experiencing persistent and severe mental illness, by way of protecting our communities, public and ensuring clients are rehabilitated and reintegrated into the community.

Therapeutically, my approach to counseling is an eclectic one. Together, we can jointly come up with goals and solutions that are going to work for you. I apply and teach a variety of interventions using modalities to best serve the client’s needs and goals. The modalities that have proven most useful are: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based therapy, existential therapy, experiential therapy, eco psychology, sensorimotor psychotherapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). I have had special training and engage in competent, culturally conscious counseling. I have the most experience working with anxiety, family/relationship conflicts, life transitions, and complex trauma/abuse. I also have experience working with depression, intellectual/developmental struggles, mild autism, and immigration/acculturation issues.

I have gained an incredible amount of insight into the experiences of humanity and their ensuing cognitive and behavioral implications. I view the therapeutic alliance as a partnership requiring mutual trust, respect, honesty, communication, and commitment to do the work. I believe in treating individuals with respect and dignity and protecting their privacy. The therapeutic relationship is unique in that it is a highly personal and at the same time, a contractual agreement. Given this, it is important for us to reach a clear understanding of how our relationship will work, and what each of us can expect.

I would like to quote Brene Brown, a world-renown psychologist: If you think dealing with issues like worthiness, authenticity and vulnerability are not worthwhile because there are more pressing issues, like the bottom line, attendance, or standardized test scores, you are sadly, sadly mistaken. It underpins everything. My passions are to personally, professionally, and socially engage in a legendary ministry, which impacts leadership and communities.
