About Costa Mesa

Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, California. The area was initially part of a Shoshone Indian village called Lukup. The land later came under control of the Spanish. The city cycled through several names until 1920, when it was given the name “Costa Mesa,” or “coastal tableland” in Spanish.  

Costa Mesa has 113,000 inhabitants. The ethnic composition of the city is 51% white, 36% Hispanic, 9% Asian, and 2% black. Eighty-five percent of residents are American citizens (compared to 93% of people nation-wide). 

Foreign-born people make up 25% of the population. Roughly 39% of residents speak a language other than English at home. There are 30,000 Spanish speakers, 1,600 Vietnamese speakers, and 1,300 Tagalog speakers in Costa Mesa.

People in Costa Mesa earn a mean annual wage of $35,300. Thirty-seven percent of adults over age 25 have a bachelor’s degree. Roughly 14% of Costa Mesa residents live in poverty.
