My Approach to Helping

I studied international disaster psychology at the University of Denver and hold a master’s degree. My clinical training has primarily been with children who have experienced trauma and childhood adversity. Much of my work has focused on childhood bereavement and how to support grieving children. I use a trauma-informed care lens to support my clients and meet them where they are. I have experience working with children as young as three years old through young adulthood. I utilize individual therapy, play therapy, family therapy, and group therapy.

I strive to be culturally competent by applying the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) meaning of the term, “…the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures,” and referring to culture as “… a term that goes beyond just race or ethnicity. It can also refer to such characteristics as age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, income level, education, geographical location, or profession” (SAMHSA, 2016). I believes this is especially important to keep in mind when working with children and adolescents who are discovering themselves and the effects of the world around them.

During my time at the University of Denver, I had the opportunity to work in Johannesburg, South Africa with survivors of trauma and torture. This experience has given me a unique perspective to mental health counseling and the experiences of people from a variety of cultures. This widened her knowledge of interventions and ways to support people experiencing a wide range of needs.

I believe children process the world differently than adults, and using play therapy can be a way for children to express themselves in their own language. I use play to allow children to feel comfortable in their environment, share at their own comfort level, and to observe patterns and themes going on in a child’s life to increase different ways to support them. I integrates both non-directive play (child lens) and directive play (therapist lens) in sessions. I believe this fosters autonomy and exploration while encouraging and challenging children to grow.

More Info About My Practice

Brightside Counseling Services, LLC. is a group network practice. I believe that everyone has the innate capacity for personal growth, and supporting you in facing what is difficult in your life and within yourself right now is what we do. I help individuals and couples foster a healthier understanding of themselves and their emotional world. It is my job to assist in creating a place of peace, love and acceptance. Clients comprise of all ages, cultural, racial, and economic backgrounds, as well as disabilities.

Communication problems, sex, anger, even illness can contribute to problems in a marriage or relationship. To manage conflicts and stress, couples sometimes turn to marriage counseling or couples counseling to help heal the relationship. Marriage counseling, also called couples therapy or relationship counseling, helps couples, married or not, understand and resolve conflicts and improve their relationship. Marriage counseling gives couples the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve and even argue in a healthier way. When couples enroll in marriage counseling, they are able to share their thoughts and express themselves in a safe, controlled environment. This allows both people to communicate more effectively, and the counselor can also give advice on how to heal and become stronger in the relationship with understanding and awareness of the other person’s attitude and feelings toward these challenging situations. Brightside Counseling Services can help you through your relationship concerns and provide you with a new sense of excitement and rebuild your intimacy.

I have experience working with children and adolescent and have training in play therapy. I can help children learn social skills as well as help them deal with emotional problems. With children, their world is far different than ours. What we think is nothing may mean the world to them and it is important to us to help them learn to express their feelings while understanding them as well.
