I offer a collaborative method in counseling. I am passionate about helping my clients uncover their personal truths. I strive to be respectful, balancing the role of internal and existential challenges with medical and physical difficulties, relationship troubles, and clients' values and cultural traditions. I am is highly skilled at helping clients find their paths from strict religious communities to the religious or non-religious systems that work best for them.

My approach to counseling is rooted in the idea that you understand your own life better than I do. I help my clients organize and understand their feelings so they can move toward their goals. I have worked with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, including medical professionals, the LGBT community, those with mental illness, business owners, and people questioning their religious beliefs.

Counseling and consultation sessions with me are respectful and cooperative, treating you as the expert on your own experience. Using a variety of approaches, we always discuss treatment goals in advance. I draw from existential and humanistic theories, emphasizing the power of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. I also use narrative therapy, family systems therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy as needed.

My Role as a Therapist

I've spent many years studying human problems. The more I learn, the more complex I realize human problems are. My role in counseling is not to provide answers, but to ask the right questions to help you arrive at the right answer for you. If your answer is something I personally disagree with, it doesn't matter. My goal as a therapist is to help you achieve the goals you set for yourself.

My View on the Nature of 'Disorders'

Having a diagnosis or disorder such as major depression or anxiety is quite common these days, while the "scary" ones like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia are still very misunderstood. While having a label for the symptoms you are experiencing can be validating I feel there needs to be a balance between understanding and that label becoming a part of your understanding of yourself. Rather than letting a diagnosis become a self-fulfilling prophecy, one can view a diagnosis as a word that helps people understand a collection of symptoms. I view disorders as collections of symptoms, and it is the symptoms that I focus on in therapy. Disorders do not define a person - I work to improve a person's quality of life.
